Who Will Lead the Unsuspecting Lemmings Over the Cliff?

چکیده
A~STRACT THESTUDY AND wpom BY THE BENTONFOUNDATION relies heavily on information supplied by the general public, which has already shown in previous contacts its total inability to select among alternatives, to rank order, and to relate desires to funding options. This information is then compared to recommendations made by representatives of organizations identified as library “leaders.” However, the report confuses leadership with management authority and ignores the fact that managers and leaders have different and frequently contradictory priorities. Finally, this article argues that any meaningful strategy must come directly from the analysis and professional judgment of librarians unfettered by what outsiders might consider desirable or reasonable, and suggests ways in which such a strategy might be developed.

The prevalence of web-based malware distribution has exploded in recent years, with malicious enterprises continuously devising new ways of exploiting vulnerabilities. Security professionals have found themselves in an arms race in an attempt to contain the spread of malware. Drive-bydownloads, as coined by Google in 2007, is a particularly insidious form of malware distribution that uses brows...
متن کاملOf lemmings and snowshoe hares: the ecology of northern Canada.
Two population oscillations dominate terrestrial community dynamics in northern Canada. In the boreal forest, the snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) fluctuates in cycles with an 8-10 year periodicity and in tundra regions lemmings typically fluctuate in cycles with a 3-4 year periodicity. I review 60 years of research that has uncovered many of the causes of these population cycles, outline areas...
متن کاملThe Lemmings Puzzle: Computational Complexity of an Approach and Identification of Difficult Instances
Artificial Intelligence can be thought of as the study of machines that are capable of solving problems that require human level intelligence. It has frequently been concerned with game playing. In this thesis we shall focus on the areas of search and complexity, with respect to single-player games. These types of games are called puzzles. Puzzles have received research attention for some decad...
